A \( 0.50 \mathrm{~g} \) mixture of \( \mathrm{Cu}_{2} \mathrm{O} \) and \( \mathrm{CuO} \) contains \( 0.425 \mathrm{~g} \) of \( \mathrm{Cu} \). What is the mass of \( \mathrm{CuO}( \) in \( \mathrm{g}) \) in the mixture?

The correct answer is: 0.21

Let the mass of CuO=w g 

For one mole of Cu2O: mass of Cu=127 g; gram molecular mass=143 g

For one mole of CuO: mass of Cu=63.5 g; gram molecular mass=79.5 g

Thus, for w g CuO, mass of  Cu=63.5w79.5 g

And, for 0.5-w g Cu2O, mass of Cu=1270.5-w143 g

Now, 63.5w79.5 +1270.5-w143 =0.425

w=0.21 g
