A ball is dropped from a bridge that is 45 m above the water. It falls directly into a boat which is moving with constant velocity. The boat is 12 m away from the point of impact when the ball is dropped. The speed of the boat is (Take g=10 m s-2)

The correct answer is: 4 m s-1

Given: Distance covered by the ball s=45 m

By using the equation s=ut+12gt2 where  u represents the initial velocity of ball, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and t is the time taken by the ball.

As the ball is dropped so its initial velocity is zero, thus s=12gt2

Time taken by the ball to reach the water surface 

t=2sg=2×4510=3s

Speed of boat =st=123=4 m s-1
