A block of mass 1 kg lies on a horizontal surface in a truck. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the surface is 0.6. If the acceleration of the truck is 5ms2, find the frictional force acting on the block.

The correct answer is: 5N

 

The maximum frictional force that can act on the mass of 1 kg will be

 

 =μN=μmg=0.6×1×9.8=5.88N

The truck is accelerating at 5ms2.

 

The pseudo force acting on the mass as seen by the observer on the truck is  m×a=1×5=5 N.  The frictional force will try to oppose the movement of the mass by this force. Therefore the frictional force acting will be 5 N.
