Consider an oscillating spring-mass system.

Potential energy at displacement x will be written as, 12kx2.

Now,

12kx2=9   ...Eq1

and

12ky2=16   ...Eq2

Then, potential energy at the displacement is given by,

=12kx+y2=12kx2+y2+2xy=12kx2+12ky2+212kx212ky2=9+16+2×3×4=49 J
