Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A boy runs on a horizontal road with a speed of 4 m s-1 while it is raining. He sees that the rain is making an angle θ with the vertical while running from west to east. However, when he runs from east to west, the angle is α. The rain is pouring down at an angle 45° with the vertical and at a speed of 8 m s-1 as shown in the figure. The ratio tanθtanα is,

The correct answer is: (1+2)2

Given,

Velocity of boy, vb=4 m s-1 and

Velocity of rain, vr=8 m s-1.

Velocity of rain with respect to boy is vrb=vr-vb..

When the boy runs from east to west:

tanθ=vrsin45°+vbvrcos45°

tanθ=82+482=2+12  ...i

When the boy runs from east to west:

tanα=vrsin45°-vbvrcos45°

tanα=82-482=2-12  ...ii

From i and ii,

tanθtanα=2+12-1=2+1222-12,

tanθtanα=2+12.
