Average velocity of car is:

vavg=Total displacementTotal time

As the car is travelling along a straight line without turning, the magnitude of total displacement is same as the distance covered. 

The time taken to cover the first half is xv1 and the time taken to cover the second half is xv2

   vavg = 2xxv1+xv2

  vavg=2xv1v2v1x+v2x=2v1v2v1+v2
