Question:
Answered & Verified by Expert
A certain salt \(X\), gives the following results.
(i) Its aqueous solution is alkaline to litmus.
(ii) It swells up to a glassy material \(\mathrm{Y}\) on strong heating.
(iii) When conc. \(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4\) is added to a hot solution of \(\mathbf{X}\), white crystal of an acid \(\mathrm{Z}\) separates out.
Write equations for all the above reactions and identify \(X, Y\) and \(Z\).

(i) Since the aqueous solution of \(\mathrm{X}\) is alkaline to litmus, here it must be a salt of strong base and weak acid.

(ii) Since \((X)\) on strong heating swells up to a glassy material \((\mathrm{Y})\). i.e. giving Borax Bead test thus it is now confirm that the compound \(\mathrm{X}\) is Borax.
(iii) When conc. \(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4\) is added to a hot solution of \(\mathrm{X}\), white crystal of an acid separate out, thus \(\mathrm{Z}\) must be ortho boric acid.
