Bleaching powder is prepared by passing chlorine gas (Cl2) through a solution of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2.

The reaction that occurs is, Ca(OH)2+Cl2 (g)→CaOCl2+H2O.

When an excess of calcium oxide is added to water, Ca(OH)2 forms,

CaO+H2O→Ca(OH)2

It partially dissolves in water to produce a solution called lime water, which is a moderate base.

Ca(OH)2 is highly basic and antibacterial due to which it is used as a disinfectant.
