We know that, to convert a galvanometer in ammeter, a very small resistance is connected in parallel, so that equivalent resistance becomes small.
Whereas, to convert a galvanometer into voltmeter of greater range, a high resistance is connected in series.
$\therefore$ To get high range voltmeter, high resistance is required.
