Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A glass flask of volume one litre at 0 °C is filled level full of mercury at this temperature. The flask and mercury are now heated to 100 °C. How much mercury will spill out if the coefficient of volume expansion of mercury is 1.82×10-4 °C-1 and linear expansion of glass is 0.1×10-4 °C-1, respectively?

The correct answer is: 1.52×10-2 L
Expansion of mercury

Vm=Vmγmθ

=1×1.82×10-4100°-0°

=1.82×10-2L

Expansion of flask,

Vg=Vγgθ=V3αgθ

= 1×3×0.1×10-4100o-0o

= 0.3 ×10-2L

Volume of mercury that over flows

=Vm-Vg

=1.82-0.3×10-2

=1.52 ×10-2L
