A horizontal wire carries 160 A current below which another wire of linear density 10 g m-1 carrying a current is kept at 4 cm distance. If the wire is kept below hangs in air, what is the current in this wire when the direction of current in both the wires is same?

g=10 m s-2 and μ0=4π×10-7

The correct answer is: 125 A

Force acting between the wires will be attractive as current flowing in both wires is in the same direction.

Now to keep the wire hanging in air, force acting per unit length of the wire due to magnetic field should balance gravitational force. Therefore,

F=λgμ0I1I22πd=λgI2=2πdλgμ0I1=2π4×10-210×10-3×104π×10-7×160=125 A
