A mature sieve tube lacks lignified walls. Sieve tube in flowering plants has elongated living cells (sieve-tube elements) of the phloem, the nuclei of which are fragmented and disappeared, and the transverse end walls are pierced by sieve-like groups of pores (sieve plates). They are the conduits of food (mostly sugar) transport.
