Question: Answered & Verified by Expert

A maximum of 3 N force can be applied on a block, down the incline, that would still not move the block which is placed on a rough inclined plane as shown in the figure. The maximum external force up the inclined plane that does not move the block is 12 N. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the plane is Take g=10 m s-2

The correct answer is: 533

Block does not move upto a maximum applied force of 3 N down the inclined plane.

Equation of motion is 3+mg sin30°=F

3+mg sin30°=μ mg cos30°            ....(i)

Similarly, block also does not move upto a maximum applied force of 12 N up the plane.

Now, equation of motion is

mg sin30°+F=12

or, mg sin30°+μ mg cos30°=12           ...(ii)

Solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we have

mg sin30°=92 and μ mg cos30°=152

Hence, dividing

 1μtan30°=9/215/2=35

μ=533
