Increase in length 

Δ L=BO+OC-BC

=2BO-2BD

 ΔL=2BO-2 L

=2 L2+x212-2 L

or ΔL=2 L 1+x2L212-2 L [ using Bionomial theorem]

 ΔL2 L 1+12x2L2-1

=x2L    x<<L

Strain =ΔL2 L

=12 L×L=12 L×x2L=x22 L2.
