When player tosses 2 fair coins then
S=HT,TH,TT,HH
Let X be a random variable that denotes the amount received by the player.
Then, X can take value 5, 2 and 1.
Now, PX=5=14,PX=2=24=12
and PX=1=14
Thus, the probability distribution of X is
       X        5         2         1¯PX1412  14-
Variance of X=X2PX-XPX2
Now XPX=5×14+2×12+1×14
=54+44+14=104=52
Variance of X=X2PX-XPX2
=25×14+4×12+1×14-522
=25+8+14-254=94
