The hyoid is a U shaped bone which is situated at the root of the tongue and between lower jaw and voice box. In the act of swallowing the hyoid bone, larynx and tongue all move upwards. It primarily serves as a structure for connecting the tongue and muscles of the oral cavity. Its functions include protection of oesophagus and enabling movements involved in speaking and swallowing.
