Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A small block of mass 200g is placed on a horizontal slab at a height of 2 m above the floor. The block is pressed against a horizontal spring fixed at one end to compress the spring through 10.0 cm. Upon releasing, the block moves horizontally till it leaves the spring. Calculate the horizontal distance covered by the block after leaving the slab and just before hitting the ground. The spring constant is 50 N m-1.
(Assume g=10 m s-2).

The correct answer is: 0.99 m

The given values,
m=200×10-3 kgh=2 mx=10×10-2 m and k=50 N m-1, use the concept of conservation of energy the potential energy stored in spring should be equal o kinetic energy of the particle,
12kx2=12mv2v=km×x=50200×10-3×10-1=1.58 m s-1
Now vertical displacement will be,
h=0+12gt2t=4g=0.63 s

So the horizontal displacement,
s=uxt=1.58×0.63=0.99 m
