A solid is floating in a liquid with some fraction of its volume submerged. If for two different temperatures T1 and T2, the fractions of the volume of the solid submerged in the liquid are f1 and f2 respectively, then the coefficient of volume expansion of the liquid is [Assume that the expansion of the solid is negligible]

The correct answer is: f1-f2f2t1-f1t2
Let V be the volume of solid ; d be its density and m be its mass; if γ is the coefficient of volume expansion of the liquid, then

Density at temperature t1 is, d1=d01+γt1

Density at temperature t2 is, d2 = d01+γt2

According to Archimede's principle,

f1V d1=m=f2 Vd2

Or d1d2 =f2f1= d01+γt11+γt2d0

Or f1+f1γt2=f2+f2 γt1

f1-f2 = γf2t1-f1t2

γ = (f1-f2)f2t1-f1t2
