Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A spherical uniform planet is rotating about its axis. The velocity of a point on its equator is 7.5 km s-1. Due to the rotation of the planet about its axis, the acceleration due to gravity g at equator is 12 of g at poles. What is the escape velocity (in km s-1) of a particle on the planet from the pole of the planet?

The correct answer is: 15

ge=gp-Rω2g2=g-Rω2

Rω2=g2R2ω2=gR2 V2=gR2   ...(1)

The escape velocity,Ve=2gR                     ...(2)

From (1) and (2)

Ve=2×2V2Ve=2V

Ve=15 km s-1
