Since, we know, work done in stretching a spring from x1 to x2 is

W=12kx22-x12

In 1st case, W=12kx2-0=12kx2 .... (i)

In 2nd case, W1=12k2x2-x2=12k4x2-x2

=12k.3x2=3.12kx2

=3W [From Eq. (i)]
