Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A wave pulse in a string is described by the equation y1=53x-4t2+2 and another wave pulse in the same string is described by y2=-53x+4t-62+2 . The values of y1,y2 and x are in metres and t is in seconds. Which of the following statement is correct?
PhysicsWaves and SoundNEET
Options:
  • A y1 travels along -x -direction and y2 along +x -direction
  • B Both y1 and y2 travel along +x -direction
  • C At x=1m, y1 and y2 always cancel
  • D At time t=1s, y1 and y2 exactly cancel everywhere

The correct answer is: At x=1m, y1 and y2 always cancel
  Given,

y1=53x-4t2+2, y2=-53x+4t-62+2

According option d , at x=1

y1=53-4t2+2

y2=-53+4t-62+2

=-53-4t2+2

Both wave pulse equation are existing in same string therefore resultant equation of wave pulse.

y=y1+y2=0

Hence, option At x=1m, y1 and y2 always cancel is correct.
