Some gases trap the heat from the sun and do not allow it to radiate back. These gases are called greenhouse gases and are responsible for increasing the earth's temperature (global warming). Relative contribution of various greenhouse gases to total global warming is carbon dioxide: 60%, methane: 20%, chlorofluorocarbons: 4% and nitrous oxide: 6%.
