Presence of a large amount of nutrients in water causes excessive growth of planktonic algae called algal bloom. It increases the organic content of the water body that results in activation of microbes and decrease in oxygen level in water body. Thus, BOD increases, and due to toxin secretion by some algae, a large number of fish deaths occur.
