Many scientist (Sachs, 1874; Bessey, 1950) believe that fungi, particularly class Phycomycetes, have evolved from siphonaceous green algae. Both the group have some common features such as presence of coenocytic thalli, flagellated zoospores, streaming movement and mode of sexual reproduction. Therefore, Phycomycetes are called algal fungi.
