Although $+3$ oxidation state is the chacteristic oxidation state of lanthanoids but cerium shows $+4$ oxidation state also. Why?

Ce acquires stable $4 \mathrm{f}^0$ electronic configuration after losing one more electron from $\mathrm{Ce}^{3+}$. So, Ce shows $+4$ oxidation state al so along with $+3$ oxidation state.
