Karyotypic studies of somatic cells are done to determine abnormalities due to change in chromosome numbers, e.g. Down's syndrome, Turner's syndrome, etc. By enzyme analysis, metabolic disorders like phenylketonuria, alkaptonuria, etc, can be detected. It is a prenatal diagnostic technique.
