An equiconvex lens is cut into two halves along i XOX and ii YOY, as shown in the figure. Let f, f, f be the focal lengths of complete lens, of each in case
(i) and of each half in case (ii), respectively

The correct answer is: f=f, f=2f
The focal length of an equiconvex lens is

1f=μ-11R1-1R2  ...(i)

For an equiconvex lens, R1=R2=R

1f=μ-11R-1-R=2μ-1R

Case I:   When the lens is cut along XOX' , then each half becomes equiconvex with

R1=+R,      R2=-R

  1f=μ-11R-1-R1fμ-11R+1R

=  μ-12R=1f           f=f

Case II:  When the lens is cut along YOY' , then each half becomes plano-convex with

R1=+R,R2=

            1f=μ-11R1-1R2

=  μ-1 1R-1=μ-1R=12ff=2f
