Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
An ideal gas expands isothermally from volume $V_1$ to volume $V_2$. It is then compressed to the original volume $V_1$ adiabatically. If $p_1, p_2$ and $W$ represent the initial pressure, final pressure and the net work done by the gas respectively during the entire process, then

Options:
  • A $p_1>p_2, W=0$
  • B $p_1>p_2, W>0$
  • C $p_2>p_1, W>0$
  • D $p_2>p_1, W < 0$

The correct answer is: $p_2>p_1, W < 0$

From graph it is clear that, $p_2>p_1$.
Since, area under adiabatic process (BCED) is greater than that of isothermal process ( $A B D E)$. Therefore, net work done
$\because \quad W_A>W_1$
$\Rightarrow \quad W < 0$
Hence option (d) is correct.
