The correct answer is: 16 cm

Using isothermal process conditions

P 1 V 1 = P 2 V 2 P 1 A 1 = P 2 A 2

8 p 0 = xp p = 8 p 0 x     (here p0 = 76 cm of Hg)

8 p 0 x + ρ m g 54 - x = ρ m g (76)

8 x + 54 - x 76 = 1

x = 16 cm
