Number of hydroxyl group by acetylation method = 280MWof C 8 H 10 O 3 42
=280-15442=12642=3
Number of phenolic hydroxyl = MWofmethyletherMW 14
=182-15414=2814=2
Hence, X = 2
Number of alcoholic -OH groups =3-2=1
Hence, Y = 1
So X + Y = 2 + 1 = 3.
