Flowering plants (angiosperms) appear; dinosaurs and many groups of organisms become extinct. Triceratops is a genus of herbivorous dinosaur that first appeared during the late Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period. Stegosaurus is considered one of the most recent common ancestors of Triceratops and Neornithes (i.e. modern birds).
