Respiration is part of the metabolic process where the nutrients are converted into useful energy for regular cell activities. It is in two-mode depending on presence or absence of oxygen. Aerobic respiration is the one where oxygen is involved and anaerobic respiration is the process where oxygen is absent. Animals cells are generally aerobic respirers and hence do not show any utilization of glucose at the start in region X. Due to need of energy, animal cells follow anaerobic respiration but the energy count is low at just 2 ATP per glucose molecule. At Y region, the cells receive oxygen, thus the ATP production increases causing a upward curve and at Z the production is highest marking the ongoing process of aerobic respiration.
