The correct answer is:
Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not correct explanation of $(A)$
The reaction of $\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$ with $\mathrm{I}^{-}$has negative cell potential thus it is not possible.
Reduction $2 \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}(a q)+2 e^{-} \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{Cu}^{+}(a q)$;
$E=+0.159$
Oxidation $2 \mathrm{I}^{-} \longrightarrow \mathrm{I}_2+2 e^{-} ; E=-0.535$
Reduction $2 \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}(a q)+2 e^{-} \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{Cu}^{+}(a q)$;
