The orange colour of \(\mathrm{SnI}_4\) is caused by the absorption of blue light, the reflected light thus containing a higher proportion of red and orange. The energy absorbed in this way causes the transfer of an electron from I to Sn. Since transferring an electron to another atom is transferring a charge, such spectra are called charge transfer spectra.
