The drugs derived from opium alongwith their synthetic relatives are called opiates or opioids. The drug that relieves pain by acting on the CNS is termed as analgesic (pain killer). Opioids bind to specific opioid receptors present in our central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. They are also called pain killers.
