On shaking with concentrated $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$ thiophene being more reactive undergoes sulphonation and the thiophene-2-sulphonic acid thus formed dissolves in concentrated $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$.
