Total biomass produced by producers is called gross primary productivity (GPP). In producers, some energy or biomass is utilized in respiration and other metabolic processes, so available biomass to next trophic level i.e. primary consumers are called net primary productivity (NPP). In these consumers, some amount of biomass is utilized in respiration and other metabolic processes and the remaining amount is assimilated in tissues, which is called as secondary productivity.
