Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
Carbon monoxide is carried around a closed cyclic process abc, in which bc is an isothermal process, as shown in the diagram. The gas absorbs 7000 J of heat as its temperature is increased from 300 K to 1000 K in going from a to b. The quantity of heat ejected by the gas during the process ca is

The correct answer is: 9800 J
Δ Q ab = + 7 0 0 0 = μ  C v 1 0 0 0 - 3 0 0                ...(i)

For the process ca:

T a = 3 0 0 K T c = T b = 1 0 0 0 K

Δ Q ca = μ  C p 3 0 0 - 1 0 0 0 = - μ  C p × 7 0 0

              = - μ C v + R 7 0 0                ...(ii)

For carbon monoxide:

          T a = 3 0 0 K T c = T h = 1 0 0 0 K

Δ Q ca = μ  C p 3 0 0 - 1 0 0 0 = - μ  C p × 7 0 0

              = - μ C v + R 7 0 0

For carbon monoxide:

              γ = 7 5

C v = R γ - 1 = R 7 5 - 1 = 5 R 2                ...(iii)

Hence, from Eq. (i)

7 0 0 0 = μ 5 R 2 × 7 0 0  or   μ R = 2 0 5 = 4

Δ Q ca = - 7 0 0 0 + 4 × 7 0 0 = - 9 8 0 0 J

Negative sign shows that heat is ejected.
