Since respiration involves breakdown of substrates, it is traditionally considered a catabolic process. The different carbon skeletons produced in the pathway are used for synthesis of some biomolecules, like during breakdown and synthesis of proteins, respiratory intermediates forms the link. Because the respiratory pathway is involved in both anabolism and catabolism it is considered as amphibolic pathway.
