Pisciculture is the rearing and induced breeding of fish by man in pond tanks and artificial reservoirs. Fisheries has an important place in Indian economy. It provides income and employment to millions of fishermen and farmers.  A large number of our population is dependent on fishes like catla, rohu, common carp, hilsa, sardines, mackerel, pomfrets etc., and other aquatic animals such as prawn, crab, lobster, edible oyster, etc., for food and its products.
