Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells of islets of Langerhans. Water soluble hormones are protein in nature and they bind to extracellular receptors and this is seen in insulin too. Hence insulin is proteinaceous in nature. Proinsulin has three polypeptide chains while mature insulin has two polypeptide chains.
