A body of mass m moving initially with velocity u on a rough surface and due to friction, it comes to rest after covering a distance s, then the retarding force is given by

ma=μ mg or a=μg .... (i)

Using, v2=u2-2as,  we have

0=u2-2μg s .... (ii)

T=12 mu2or u2=2Tm

We have from equation (ii),

0=2Tm-μg s

2Tm=2μgy   s=y .... (iii)

Frictional force, f=μmg .... (iv)

From equation (iii) and (iv), we get f=Ty
