The correct answer is:
axillary buds are activated
The hormones which are produced in the plant are called phytohormone. Auxin is a phytohormone. An apical bud is present at the top of the plant and an axillary bud or lateral bud is present on the lateral side. The phytohormone which is synthesized in the apical bud is auxin that helps in maintaining the apical dominance in which the growth of the lateral bud stop but if the apical bud is decapitated, means removed then the concentration of the auxin gets low and this causes the activation of the axillary bud which helps in increasing the plant width.
