Nitrogenase is an enzyme involved in biological nitrogen fixation. If this enzyme is inactivated then the nitrogen fixation will not be observed and this is very specific for legumes. Enzyme nitrate reductase is involved in conversion of nitrate to nitrate. Conversion of ammonia to nitrate is carried out by Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter .
