When cells are broken up under laboratory conditions, the endoplasmic reticulum breaks out to form microsomes. These are small bodies that are absent in healthy, living cells and these structures are important for many experimental purposes. Being similar to ER these structures are used to perform protein synthesis on a membrane and this helps to understand the actual process that occurs in the cell, as these microsomes mimic the activity of the endoplasmic reticulum in a test tube.
