The correct answer is:
atrophy of adrenal cortex
Pituitary gland is the master endocrine gland. It is made up of Adenohypophysis and Neurohypophysis. Adenohypophysis secretes many hormones depending on the signals from hypothalamus in form of releasing and inhibiting hormones. One such example is ACTH i.e. Adreno corticotrophic hormone. This is released when hypothalamus secrets CRH i.e. Corticotrophic releasing hormone. ACTH acts on adrenal cortex and thus it causes release of Glucocoticoids, Mineralocorticoids and Sex corticoids as per body's demand. One such mineralocorticoid is Aldosterone which when released causes Sodium and Water reabsorption and release of Potassium and thus electrolyte and water balance is maintained. If pituitary gland is removed, ACTH production will stop and thus Aldosterone will not be released leading to atrophy of Adrenal cortex. Sodium and water reabsorption and Potassium excretion will be reversed.
