the fringe width will decrease
As we know
$$
\beta=\frac{D \lambda}{d}
$$
and
$$
\lambda \propto \frac{1}{\mu}
$$
From Eqs. (i) and (ii)
$\therefore$
$$
\begin{array}{l}
\beta \propto \lambda \propto \frac{1}{\mu} \\
\beta \propto \frac{1}{\mu}
\end{array}
$$
Hence, (a) is correct.
$$
\beta=\frac{D \lambda}{d}
$$
and
$$
\lambda \propto \frac{1}{\mu}
$$
From Eqs. (i) and (ii)
$\therefore$
$$
\begin{array}{l}
\beta \propto \lambda \propto \frac{1}{\mu} \\
\beta \propto \frac{1}{\mu}
\end{array}
$$
