According to Hardy Weinberg's equation, p+q=1, where p is the frequency of the dominant allele and q is the frequency of recessive allele in the population. In the given data, 36 cats are white. They have to be pure homozygous individuals have recessive alleles. Thus q2=36/100 and q=0.6. Thus p=1  0.6=0.4
