Electrostatic precipitator has electrodes maintained at many thousand volts. They produce a corona that releases negatively charged electrons which combine with dust particles to give them a negative charge. Grounded collecting plates collect these negatively charged dust particles if the air velocity is low allowing the dust to fall.
