Apomixis is the phenomenon of developing seeds without fertilization. There several routes taken by different plants to produce apomictic embryos. In the citrus and mango group, cells surrounding the embryo sac participate in seed making without fertilization. These cells are the maternal sporophytic tissue around the embryo sac.
